South Korean media has reported that a Presidential helicopter hit a tree while landing at the presidential palace in mid-August, resulting in damage to its fuselage.
The President was not on the helicopter at the time of the incident.
The current South Korean “Air Force One” helicopter is a modified Sikorsky S-92, designated as a VH-92.
Three helicopters were acquired during the presidency of Roh Moo-hyun (2003-2008). However, the South Korean military believes that the helicopter is relatively old and oversized, posing a high risk of accidents.
Sikorsky is one of the major U.S. helicopter manufacturers, best known for its UH-60 Black Hawk.
The Marine One fleet consists of one VH-3 (H-3 Sea King) and one VH-60 (UH-60 Black Hawk). On Nov. 6, 2015, Lockheed Martin announced that it had completed the acquisition of Sikorsky, at a price of US $9 billion.
