Supernal eVTOL Cabin Concept Wins Design Award

Supernal eVTOL Cabin Concept Wins Design Award

Supernal, the advanced air mobility (AAM) arm of Hyundai Motor Group, won a product design award from the International Forum (iF) Design Award for the cabin concept of its eVTOL.

Judged across five criteria – idea, form, function, differentiation, and impact – Supernal saw off competition from 11,000 other entries from 56 countries to take home the coveted prize.

The cabin design, which was publicly unveiled at the 2022 Farnborough International Airshow, was created in collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group’s design studios and revolved around sustainability, safety, and overall comfort.

This steered the direction of the materials, which included “advanced recyclable carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic, durable plant-based leather, recycled plastic fabric, and responsibly sourced woods”. The frames of the seats were created using excess raw materials.

Taking passenger comfort into account as well, other features include ergonomically contoured seats, charging stations, and personal storage spaces.

“The iF Design Awards is one of the world’s top product design competitions and Supernal’s recognition reflects only some of the capabilities that Hyundai Motor Group will bring to the emerging Advanced Air Mobility industry,” Luc Donckerwolke, chief creative officer, Hyundai Motor Group said.

“The Supernal eVTOL vehicle cabin concept draws on the competence of Hyundai Motor Group and the skillset of experienced automotive designers, which allowed us to develop a new air mobility concept that will be not only safe and rational but also highly emotional.”

Supernal will receive its design prize at the iF Awards ceremony in Berlin on May 15, 2023.
