At the end of 2023, there were 890 civil and parapublic use turbine helicopters in China, comprising of 791 helicopters in operation and 99 in storage. This fleet included law enforcement helicopters operated by the numerous provincial police departments, but excludes pure military use helicopters.
Airbus Helicopters had the largest market share amongst all OEMs in the China market with 271 units in operation. Bell Helicopter had a fleet of 226 helicopters in operation, followed by Leonardo with 72, Russian Helicopters with 64, AVIC with 53 and Sikorsky with 46. Enstrom, Robinson, Kaman and MD Helicopters had minor shares.
Leonardo accounted for 34% of the 99 helicopters in storage, which was mainly due to Shanghai-based King Wing shutting down the majority of its operations during 2022. The company operated and managed more than 60 Leonardo helicopters and was a distributor and maintenance service provider. While a number of the King Wing fleet has been placed with other operators, more than 30 units remained in
storage at the end of 2023.
There were 25 Bell helicopters in storage at the end of 2023, the majority of which were new Bell 505s which were “delivered” but never entered service. Single engine turbine helicopters accounted for 56% (445 units) of
the in operation fleet in China, followed by Medium Twin (138 units), Heavy (110) and Light Twin (97). Only one Super Medium helicopter
was recorded as in operation at the end of 2023.
NOTE: CIVIL HELICOPTERS IN THIS ARTICLE INCLUDE PURE CIVIL AND PARAPUBLIC USE TURBINE HELICOPTERS, WHILE THE REST OF OUR REPORT DESCRIBES ONLY PURE CIVIL HELICOPTERS.
