British-Belgian teenager, Mack Rutherford, recently became the youngest person to fly solo around the world when he landed at an airport in Sofia, Bulgaria, marking the end of a solo round-the-world flight that began on March 23.
Rutherford was piloting a Shark ultralight aircraft, which has a cruising speed of about 186mph (about 300kph). He flew 54,124km (33,631m) through 52 countries on five continents, including India, China, Korea and Japan, and crossed the equator twice in the process.
His journey also broke two Guinness World Records; the youngest person to fly solo around the world and the youngest person to fly solo around the world in an ultralight aircraft. The previous record holder for ultralight aircraft was his sister Zara Rutherford, who flew solo around the world in January, and the previous record holder for youngest person to fly around the world alone was 18-year-old Briton Travis Ludlow.
Mack Rutherford said he has wanted to be a pilot since he was three years old and became the world’s youngest pilot when he obtained his small plane license at age 15. His father, a former British Army helicopter pilot, and his mother, a lawyer from Belgium, also love to fly in their spare time.
