Gulfstream G650 gets EASA Steep Approach Nod

Gulfstream’s G650 family of business jets have been certificated by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to perform steep approaches into airports.

The approval opens the door for the G650 and G650ER to operate into airports with steep approaches, including London City Airport and Lugano, Switzerland.

Because of its location in the heart of London’s financial district, London City Airport requires a steep 5.5 degree approach to land on its short runway.

In 2019 Gulfstream performed tests at the airport, with the US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) certificating the G650 family for steep approaches in May of the same year.

“We are pleased to be able to increase flexibility for our G650 and G650ER European operators by giving them access to such airports as London City near the city’s financial district and even more remote airfields throughout Europe,” said Mark Burns, President, Gulfstream. “The G650 family’s high-speed performance advantage paired with this new certification will expand opportunities for our customers with more options for remote destinations.”

EASA’s certification means that the G650 family can now fly approaches up to 6 degrees.
