Eight Major Companies Lead Pilot Study on Urban Air Transportation for Osaka Expo
The Osaka government has allocated around USD$210 million to eight Japanese companies to help support the development of advanced air mobility in time for the 2025 Osaka Expo.
The eight companies include Mitsui & Co., Airbus, Sumitomo, Orix, and Kanematsu, all of which are participating in the Osaka Expo Urban Air Mobility(UAM) Pilot Study.
Mitsui will lead in creating a management platform for an integrated UAM operation system, which will include establishing Osaka Expo’s flight coordination center.
Other members involved in the Mitsui-led project include the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), JR West Innovations, Aero Asahi, Ogawa Air and Terra Drone.
The Japanese government has recently announced an ” Implementation Schedule of the Flying Car Era”, which shows that Japan will undertake test flights in urban areas in 2023, and officially put them into commercial operations in 2025, ready to formally enter the era of flying cars in 2030.
