Switchblade, the world’s first flyable three-wheeled car, has received permission from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to begin test flights.
Developed over 14 years by Sampson Sky, the car costs around USD$170,000 and takes just three minutes to convert to flight mode.
Sam Bousfield, CEO and designer of Samson Sky, said the Switchblade three-wheeled vehicle would need to reach 88mph / 142kph before it can take off.
The Switchblade will be launched in three versions: regular, special and limited editions when it enters into mass production in 2024.
The company says that it has already sold more than 2,100 cars to more than 50 countries.
Although the news has attracted widespread attention, buyers of the Switchblade will need to assemble many parts of the car themselves, as it will effectively be supplied in kit form.
Additionally, as an airport will be required for take-off and landing, owners of Switchblade will need to hold a pilot’s license.
