Australia Orders Six Leonardo AW139s

Australian operators have ordered six AW139s from Leonardo for helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) as well as search and rescue (SAR) missions. The order was announced at Australia’s ongoing aviation show Avalon 2023.

The aircraft, which has brought Australia’s AW139 fleet to over 60, will be delivered in 2024 to operators including Babcock, CQ Rescue and StarFlight Australia.

The two-engine helicopters manufactured by Leonardo feature the latest avionics technology and are able to meet requirements from operators for tasks in harsh conditions.

“The AW139 aircraft provides increased speed range and operational capability which is essential for the vast distance and challenging terrains across Australia,” said Peter Newington, Managing Director of Aviation & Critical Services, Babcock.
